사랑하는 손자 너무잘한다 수고하였구나

I was in my last year at University of Maryland (‘86) when she arrived. I believe that I was welcoming to her, at least I tried to be because it was obvious to me that underneath her calm exterior, she was a bit nervous. After all , she was in her first days as a newly appointed voice teacher and wanted to make a good impression. By way of introducing herself, she was asked to perform for the vocal faculty and it’s students. I had performed for them many times and knew far too well who my audience was in that voice performance department, but I was also very curious to hear Ms Balthrop and wanted to be supportive. She sang “Gretchen am spinnrade”….. by the end of the song and it’s dramatic finale her voice soared up and over beautifully. Afterwards , when she confessed to me just how nervous she was I thought, “ she’s performed all over the world and in much larger venues , but here, singing for our little circle of aspiring musicians…?She then proceeded to confide to me that for her, the toughest audiences are her colleagues and how relieved she was to have passed this little initiation. As my final days at U of M ticked down I dreamed about my next adventure …. in a few months I was going off to Philadelphia and the prestigious Curtis Institute. However , after I graduated ,from time to time, I would think about Ms Balthrop and remember her advice to me.- “ Find a way to have a personal life , make a home for yourself, because it’s not all about having a singing career. That will fade over time and then what are you left with?“ I also recall what she described as her path to winning the Met contract, singing her debut as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte and being totally focused on that objective. However, at College Park , Md. she had been given an opportunity to prove herself again. It seemed to me that being on the vocal staff of our music school meant the world to her and she was eager to begin this new phase of her career. Not long after I left school we bumped into each other during a voice competition held at the Kennedy Center. In those crowded halls I remember that she couldn’t quite place me, however , to me, she now seemed very secure and there was now a distinguished gentleman by her side. Had she found a home? I sure hope that she had……may angels guide you on your flight , dear Ms Balthrop 🙏

Beautiful playing! I especially loved the oboist's gorgeous tone, dynamics, and subtle use of vibrato.

SoHyun Ko plays the violin as stunningly beautifully as ever.

Came here after Alfred Brendel playing Beethoven's Piano Sonata No.32 in C minor, 3rd movement. (Adagio.) Wonder if Ludwig rated this Catavina above that. Emotional depth, development and contrast-wise, I really can't see how. In comparison, it feels like the kind of turgid, inoffensive background music one might hear in an English village tea 'n scone shop. Also nichts besonderes, Herr Maestro.

SoHuyns playing is exquisite, it goes without saying, but can we also have a shout out for her brilliant accompanist Miki Aoki, It’s not easy being a whole orchestra on one instrument and she manages it so well, not overshadowing SoHyun.

Holy moly! Like watching a robot. Perfect pitch. My only criticism: non-variable speed vibrato. When tempo slows, vibrato should generally slow down. When temo rises, vibrato should generally speed up. Her pitch is perfect, but her tone needs to experience some imperfection to gain some emotion. Variations in Vibrato add SO MUCH emotion/character. Speak your heart with your vibrato, not just volume.
